Butterflies have always been a symbol of life for me. We crawl around as larvae to disintegrate inside the chrysalis, a process that cannot be hurried or forced because then the organism dies. Just like in life this process kan feel messy, hard, painful, tight. But inside this disintegrated, gooey mess, are cells called imaginal cells, cells that carry the blueprint of the butterfly. Then, all of a sudden, when the process is ready, it’s time, time for the butterfly to spread its wings, show the world its true authentic self.
That’s how I see the inner processes we as humans go through. Processes that cannot be forced… processes full of wisdom… processes that when they receive the support and the time they need give life to the beautiful butterfly that’s been there all along.
These are the butterflies that emerge in my paintings. Butterflies that come through me in a process where I step out of the way, open upp a holy space for what needs to emerge in the painting and give it the space and time it needs.
